Recent Status: Previously, this rare species was thought to be restricted to the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, with a single record from county Durham.
More recently populations have been found in different habitats - coastal shingle and grassland locally on the south coast and in Suffolk. Some of these newly discovered populations are quite large.

Life Style: A single brooded species. The moth flies during late afternoon into dusk in July and August. The larvae feed from a mobile case on the seeds of Rumex hydrolapathum in wetland habitats whilst on coastal shingle and grassland they feed on Rumex crispus. Larval density seems to be much higher on Rumex crispus. The larvae hibernate fully fed low on the plant and pupate in spring.

Identification: A pale moth with paler costa. It can be identified by genitalia dissection. The Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland should be used as reference for that.
The case is a dark silken trivalve case. The oral end is around 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis resulting in the case being held close to the stem when hibernating and pupating. More Info
