Coleophora laricella

(Hübner, [1817])526 / 37.066

Morley's Final Catalogue: A frequent species among larch, where it occurs in Bentley Woods (Pyett); Martlesham (Whit.); Hacheston (Hkr); and Brandon (Barrett).

Recent Status: A common species recorded in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species that flies at night and comes to light. It can be found in June and July. The larvae mine leaves of Larix decidua. They construct a case for instar 3 that they hibernate in. They continue feeding in spring before pupation attached to the foodplant.

Identification: The moth is a glossy grey, sometimes tinged ochre. The genitalia are very distinctive.
The larvae construct their first case by cutting a section of mined leaf. They extend this by cutting successive sections of mined leaves and binding them to the oral end with silk. The oral end is set at 60 degrees to the long axis in the later cases. More Info
