Morley's Final Catalogue: Very local among poplar at Brandon in the Breck (Warren).

Recent Status: Fairly common across Suffolk.

Life Style: The moth is double brooded flying during April, May, June, August and September. The larvae mine leaves of Populus nigra, P. nigra var italica and P. x canadensis. They pupate on a leaf or the ground in a brown cocoon.

Identification: The moth has dark grey to black wings with a purple sheen. The tegulae and a long mark from the wing base to around two fifth is cream. There are two large opposing cream marks beyond and the cilia are whitish. The collar and scape are also cream and the head tuft ochre.

The larva creates a gallery from an ovum on either side of a leaf. The gallery is long and narrow before a shorter wider section that becomes very wide at maturity. It generally stays between two side veins. There is a central frass line. More Info
