Recent Status: An uncommon species in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying from June to August. The larvae mine leaves of Populus tremula but may occasionally use P. x-canescens and P. alba. They pupate in a dark cocoon on the ground.

Identification: The moth has purplish fuscous forewings marked with off white. There is a central spot at one third, a tornal and opposing costal spot and the terminal cilia are also whitish. The wing base and thoracic tegulae are whitish as are the collar and scape. The head tuft is orange. The species is similar to S. trimaculella but that species has the wing base mark connected to that at one third. Genitalia dissection is advised for confirmation of identification.
The larvae mine from an ova on the upper side of a leaf. The mine is irregular. Essentially it is a gallery but often forms one or more blotches as a consequence of closely working back on the last part of the gallery. More Info
