Recent Status: The first county record was of a tenanted leaf mine in Hornbeam found at Buckle's Wood, Elmsett on 05/10/2025 (N. Sherman et.al.). An adult was reared which emerged on 21/03/2026, which, upon dissection, was found to be a male Stigmella carpinella.

Life Style: Possibly a double brooded species found during May and July/August. The larvae mine leaves of Carpinus. They pupate in a fluffy white cocoon on a leaf or the ground.

Identification: The moth is coarsely scaled with an irregular pale fascia and whitish cilia. The head tuft is ochreous and the scape and collar whitish. Very similar in appearance to Stigmella floslactella.
The early gallery is filled with frass in an interupted line, later leaving clear margins, with the frass less dense and scattered, from an ovum on the underside of the leaf, near a rib. It is identical to that formed by Stigmella floslactella.
