Stigmella viscerella

(Stainton, 1853)95 / 4.019

Morley's Final Catalogue: Tuddenham, where it is very local, before 1890 (Warren).

Recent Status: Fairly well recorded across Suffolk.

Life Style: The moth is single brooded flying during May and June. The larvae mine leaves of Ulmus.

Identification: The moth is unicolorous bronze brown with a white patch in the cilia. The head is ochreous and the scape and collar paler. The moth can be identified by breeding out from a mine or by genitalia dissection.
The larva creates a tightly packed gallery from an ovum on the upper-side of a leaf. They turn back and forth following the line of the previous section of gallery. It may diverge at maturity. The frass is reddish brown when fresh and fills the gallery, More Info
