Stigmella hybnerella

(Hübner, 1796)99 / 4.030

Morley's Final Catalogue: Not listed. The Nepticulids were not extensively studied and only 21 were listed.

Recent Status: A fairly common species in Suffolk.

Life Style: The moth is double or triple brooded being found from April to September. The larvae mine leaves of Crataegus. They pupate in a dark reddish brown cocoon on the leaf or on the ground.

Identification: The moth has a silvery fascia beyond which the forewing is bright purplish fuscous and before which is golden or light bronze brown. The scape is white and the head tuft and collar black or orange. The moth can be identified by breeding out from a mine or by genitalia dissection.
The larva creates a narrow gallery from an ovum usually on the underside of a leaf close to the mid-vein. They later form a blotch that sometimes overwhelms the evidence of the earlier gallery and can extend to the leaf margin. More Info
